An Overview of Shoreline Mapping by Using Airborne LiDAR

Since the shorelines are important geographical boundaries, monitoring shoreline change plays an role in integrated coastal management. With evolution of remote sensing technology, many studies have used optical images to measure and extract shoreline. However, some factors limit use imaging on mapping. Considering that airborne LiDAR data can provide more accurate topographical information, there been investigated using map shorelines. a literature review combines with measurement extracting methods has not yet conducted. The motivation this paper is present narrative mapping by LiDAR, including laser scanning system, availability, current extraction techniques over past two decades. Therefore, we conducted broad search finally summarized than 130 articles technology for extraction. We find still meets challenge, such as objective condition limitations, availability self-characteristic limitations. method great potential be improved; particularly when combined emerging state-of-the-art point cloud processing (e.g., deep-learning algorithms), they will brighter future. This provides overview trend points out challenges, future opportunities. Moreover, it also serve starting novices experts study which scientific support studying changes.
